Driving Efficiency with AI in Adaptive Control Systems
As Michael Sharp previously wrote for NIST, “it’s no surprise to anyone that a full suite of ever-evolving technologies is rising up to provide manufacturers with options for new sensing devices, cybersecurity enhancements, adaptive control, and evaluation systems — all backed by industrial artificial intelligence (AI).” From tools such as adaptive CNC machine control systems and 3D printing to industrial robotics, these AI-driven developments are all key components of digital manufacturing and its focus on operational enhancement. One of the most impactful in that list is adaptive control.
AI and Adaptive Control Systems
With the advancement of technologies such as AI, “Control systems have surpassed previous limits, offering unmatched precision and intelligent features,” Shawn Cox explained in an article for Control Design. That’s why in that article Cox named AI as a top trend for the control systems field. With AI, control systems are better prepared to make decisions, offer real-time data analysis, predict issues, and boost performance. AI-backed adaptive control algorithms are also able to reduce energy consumption.
AI-Driven Systems
We’ve seen AI integrated into other systems to increase predictive and efficiency capabilities. For instance, a 2023 report from the Government Accountability Office concluded that adaptive traffic signal control has the potential to cut down the frequency of crashes and improve emergency response time. Considering this benefit, states like Florida have started to integrate AI-backed traffic management systems.
Keeping with the automotive theme, Volvo Trucks North America also introduced an AI-powered management system for adaptive maintenance to boost fleet performance. “Powered by proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) models, the adaptive maintenance system adjusts service intervals dynamically based on factors such as fuel consumption, idle time, and oil samples,” Bulk Transporter summarized.
